MFG-VSM-101 | Introduction to Value-Stream Mapping
Duration: 8 Hours Format: In-Person or On-Site Audience: All Manufacturing Employees Involved in CI
Value-Stream Mapping (VSM) is a Lean tool that provides a visual picture of how material and information flow through a manufacturing process — from raw material to the customer. By mapping the current state and designing an improved future state, organizations can identify and prioritize waste elimination across the entire value stream. This introductory course covers VSM concepts, icons, and the mapping process from start to finish.
Learning Objectives
- Explain the purpose of Value-Stream Mapping and how it differs from a process flowchart
- Identify and correctly use standard VSM icons for material flow, information flow, and operators
- Define key VSM data points including cycle time, changeover time, uptime, and inventory levels
- Read and interpret a current-state value-stream map
- Identify waste and improvement opportunities within a current-state map
- Describe the relationship between the current state map and the future state vision
MFG-VSM-104 | Value-Stream Mapping for Office and Administrative Processes
Duration: 8 Hours Format: In-Person Audience: Administrative, HR, Quality, and Support Staff
Waste and delay are not limited to the shop floor — they exist in every office and administrative process that supports manufacturing. This course extends Value-Stream Mapping to non-production environments, helping support functions identify waste in order processing, scheduling, HR onboarding, quality documentation, and other administrative workflows.
Learning Objectives
- Explain how VSM principles apply to office and administrative processes
- Identify common forms of waste in administrative and information-flow processes
- Adapt standard VSM icons and data collection methods for use in an office environment
- Map a current-state administrative process from request to completion
- Design a leaner future-state process that reduces lead time and eliminates waste
- Develop an improvement action plan for an administrative process in their department
MFG-VSM-105 | VSM Facilitation Skills for Internal Leaders
Duration: 8 Hours Format: In-Person Audience: CI Coordinators, Lean Champions, Supervisors
Organizations that rely on outside facilitators for every VSM event cannot build sustainable Lean capability. This course prepares internal CI leaders to independently facilitate Value-Stream Mapping workshops, guide cross-functional teams through both current and future state mapping, and sustain momentum through the improvement planning and execution phase. Includes facilitation practice using realistic manufacturing scenarios.
Learning Objectives
- Plan and prepare a VSM workshop including team selection, logistics, and pre-work
- Facilitate a cross-functional team through current-state data collection and mapping
- Guide the team through future-state design using structured Lean thinking prompts
- Manage common facilitation challenges including group conflict, data gaps, and scope creep
- Coach team members on VSM tools and icons during the mapping process
- Lead the development of a VSM implementation plan and secure team commitment to action
